Virginia Drops Doubleheader at Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) homered in both games, but Virginia (8-14) fell to Hampton (7-9) by finals of 3-2 and 8-3 Tuesday (March 6).
Davis has now homered in five straight games, the longest known streak in UVA history.
GAME ONE | HAMPTON 3 – VIRGINIA 2
The Lady Pirates jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first. A leadoff single and stolen base allowed Dasha Hill to score on a pair of wild pitches. Alana VanDenburg extended the lead to 2-0 with a solo home run to left.
Virginia pulled a run back in the third as Davis lifted a solo home run to left. The blast is her seventh of the season and marks the fourth consecutive game with a home run for the senior. In game-by-game records dating back to 2000, it is the only stretch of four consecutive games with a homer in UVA history.
Hampton responded immediately to plate its third run of the game in the bottom half. A walk put Hill aboard and it appeared the Hoos erased her on a caught stealing, but the new obstruction rule was called, granting Hill second. She would swipe third on another bang-bang play and score on a squeeze.
Olivia Gott (Weston, Fla.) pulled the Hoos back within a run in the top of the fifth with her third home run in as many games. Gott uncorked a no-doubt shot that cleared the left field wall by over thirty feet.
The solo home run would be the last run scored in the game, as the Hoos left nine runners aboard. Lacy Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) took the loss in the start for Virginia, falling to 4-4 on the season.
GAME TWO | HAMPTON 8 – VIRGINIA 3
Allison Davis went deep for a fifth-consecutive game, extending her hitting streak to seven games, but Hampton struck in each of the first four innings to sweep the doubleheader.
The Pirates score a pair in the first on one hit and an error. They would add two more in the second on the strength of two singles and another error.
Virginia closed within one as Davis launched her eighth home run of the year. Erika Osherow (Darien, Conn.) opened the inning with a double to right center before a walk put two aboard. That’s when Davis drove her three-run shot over the left field wall.
Hampton answered right back in the bottom of the third, striking for three runs to rebuild the four-run edge. The Pirates would tack on an insurance run in the fourth to make it 8-3.
Osherow (4-6) took the loss in the circle. She was charged with seven runs, three earned on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings. Tabby Dabney (Mechanicsville, Va.) worked 3 2/3 innings in relief, allowing a single run on four hits.
