CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The Virginia men’s track and field team concluded the opening day of the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by Miami, on Friday (March 16) at Cobb Stadium.
Junior Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) finished first in the hammer throw. He recorded a mark of 70.93m (232’08”) to win the event.
“Hilmar had an impressive performance despite the fact that we are in a heavy training cycle at this point,” assistant coach Martin Maric said. “We are taking it one day at a time this year. His best throws are just ahead of him.”
Redshirt sophomore Sam Young (Lewes, Del.) placed second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 5.05m (16’6.75″).
“Sam opened the outdoor season on a high note,” assistant coach Mario Wilson said. “He had a very productive week and is really close to a breakthrough performance.”
Junior Nace Plesko (Ljubljana, Slovenia) finished fourth in the discus with a mark of 49.78m (163’4″), while redshirt junior James Williams (Radford, Va.) finished fifth in the event with a throw of 48.77m (160′).
