Georgetown's Seven-Run Fifth Downs Virginia
April 18, 2018
WASHINGTON – Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) and Danni Ingraham (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) each homered for Virginia (12-32), but Georgetown (13-30) scored seven runs in the fifth inning to turn a one-run game into a 15-7 run-rule victory.
Georgetown jumped to an early lead with runs in the first and second inning. An infield single and double put the Hoyas up 1-0 after one. An error sparked a big second for the Hoyas, who tacked on three more to make it 4-0.
Virginia found its stride in the third, as Madi Traver (Coppell, Texas) worked a leadoff walk in the inning. Allison Davis tripled to score the first run of the game and scored when Ingraham launched a two-run shot to left. The homer was the 33rd of Ingraham’s career, pulling the senior two shy of the all-time record at Virginia.
Ashlee Davis (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Kate Covington (McLean, Va.) produced back-to-back singles to load the bases as the inning continued. Freshman catcher Ashley Jennings (Forest, Va.) fisted a single back up the middle to score a pair, giving Virginia its first lead of the night at 5-4.
After a leadoff single in Georgetown’s half of the third, a potential double play ball saw an error put runners at the corners for the Hoyas. A bunt single loaded the bases for pinch hitter Ciara Sullivan, who uncorked a grand slam to give the Hoyas an 8-5 advantage.
Allison Davis pulled the Cavaliers within a run in the fourth with her career-high 10th home run of the season. The no-doubter to left center drove home Savana Avilla (Phoenix, Ariz.) to cut the deficit to 8-7.
Georgetown would end the game with a seven-run bottom of the fifth, turning the one-run affair into a run rule. All seven of the Hoyas’ runs came with two outs in the inning.
