Guy Makes History in Pole Vault at NCAAs

EUGENE, Ore.- Redshirt junior Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) made history on Thursday (June 7) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field as the first UVA female student-athlete to earn All-American honors in the pole vault.

Guy cleared a height of 4.30m (14’1.25″) to tie for fourth place with Virginia Tech’s Rachel Baxter.

Additionally, Guy was the first female UVA performer to earn first-team All-America honors since Dallas Rose placed seventh in the triple jump in 2014. She also posted the team’s best individual finish since Stephanie Garcia finished second in the 3000m steeplechase in 2011.

“Bridget competed like an NCAA Championship veteran today,” assistant coach Mario Wilson said. “She was probably nervous but it didn’t show at all. Her performance today was a testimony to her desire to compete well at the highest levels. I’m so grateful that she will be coming back for her fifth year.”

In the women’s 400m hurdles, sophomore Andrenette Knight (Morant Bay, Jamaica) recorded a time of 57.89 to finish 10th. She earned second-team All-America honors in the event, capturing the program’s first All-America honor in the 400m hurdles since Ayla Smith in 2011.

The Cavaliers opened the women’s competition with 4.5 points, ranking 21st in the team standings. Stanford leads the field with 25 points. Florida is in second with 17 points, followed by Georgia and Ole Miss in third place with 14 points.

The Virginia men’s team will return to action tomorrow. Sophomore Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) will compete in the triple jump, while graduate student Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) will race in the finals of the 1500m run.
