Abbott, Lynch Listed on ACC All-Academic Team
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia lefthanded pitchers, Andrew Abbott (Halifax, Va.) and Daniel Lynch (Henrico, Va.) were listed as members of the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball All-Academic Team.
To be in consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, student-athletes need a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The Cavaliers have placed multiple selections on the ACC All-Academic Team in all but one year since 2007.
In his first year on grounds, Abbott was one of the most reliable arms out of the Virginia bullpen, garnering Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper as well as ACC All-Freshman accolades. He appeared in a team-high 24 games (23 out of the bullpen) and struck out 78 batters in 51 innings pitched. He pitched three innings or more in his club-best six saves. He struck out five batters or more in nine of his 24 relief appearances.
Lynch, a Spanish major, enjoyed the best season of his three-year Cavalier career. A first round pick (34th overall) by the Kansas City Royals, Lynch struck out 105 batters becoming the first Virginia pitcher since 2015 to reach the century mark in strikeouts. He fanned 10 or more batters in four-consecutive starts, all against ACC opponents, from March 17 – April 6. Only Danny Hultzen, the second overall pick in the 2011 MLB draft, was able to strikeout out 10 or more in four-straight starts at Virginia.
Over Lynch’s final two starts of the 2018 season, he logged 14 innings and struck out 20 batters, including a career-high, 13 against Georgia Tech on May 14. The lefty worked into the seventh inning in all but two of his 13 starts on the year. Seven of his eight quality starts on the season came against ACC opponents.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
