CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –We're back with another update on our former players in the NWSL. Morgan Brian made her first start of the NWSL season last week, while Emily Sonnett and the Portland Thorns picked up a big win with a shutout of Utah, and Kristen McNabb's Seattle Reign FC remained in second place in the NWSL standings with a win over Houston.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –We’re back with another update on our former players in the NWSL. Morgan Brian made her first start of the NWSL season last week, while Emily Sonnett and the Portland Thorns picked up a big win with a shutout of Utah, and Kristen McNabb’s Seattle Reign FC remained in second place in the NWSL standings with a win over Houston.

Brian made her first start of the season on Wednesday night, taking the pitch against the league-leading North Carolina Courage. It was a tough night for the Red Stars with a 4-1 loss at the hands of the NWSL’s top team. Chicago is currently fourth in the standings, holding to the final playoff spot for the league championship. The Red Stars will play one match this week, hosting Seattle at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday (July 14).

DANIELLE COLAPRICO – CHICAGO RED STARS – MIDFIELDER
Season Stats – GP-GS: 17-16 Goals: 1 Assists: 4 Shots: 5 Minutes: 1,419
Colaprico and Brian started in the midfield together on Wednesday night in a 4-1 loss to the league-leading North Carolina Courage. In Saturday’s match against Sky Blue FC, a 3-1 victory by the Red Stars, Colaprico made the start before being replaced in the midfield by Brian late in the game. Chicago will return to action this weekend, hosting Seattle at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday (July 14).

MAKENZY DONIAK – UTAH ROYALS – MIDFIELDER
Doniak, the 2015 ACC Player of the Year, continues to be sidelined with an ACL injury, but has found a new home with the Utah Royals after a trade two weeks ago by the North Carolina Courage.

VERONICA LATSKO – HOUSTON DASH – MIDFIELDER
Season Stats – GP-GS: 13-3 Goals: 2 Assists: 1 Shots: 10 Minutes: 440
Latsko did not see action this week as the Dash went on the road and dropped a 3-1 contest to the Seattle Reign. Houston will host Orlando on Wednesday (July 11) at 8:30 p.m. ET before taking to the road on Sunday (July 15) for a showdown at Portland. The match with the Thorns is set for an 11 p.m. ET kick.

KRISTEN MCNABB – SEATTLE REIGN FC – MIDFIELDER
Season Stats – GP-GS: 12-9 Goals: 0 Assists: 0 Shots: 0 Minutes: 825
McNabb and the Reign picked up a 3-1 win over the Houston Dash on Saturday night, rallying for the victory to improve to 7-3-5 on the season. Seattle maintained its hold on second place in the standings with the win. The Reign will return to action with a Wednesday (July 11) match at home against Utah at 10:30 p.m. ET before traveling to face Chicago on Saturday (July 14) at 10:30 p.m. ET.

BRITTANY RATCLIFFE – UTAH ROYALS FC – MIDFIELDER
Season Stats – GP-GS: 8-4 Goals: 2 Assists: 0 Shots: 3 Minutes: 335
Ratcliffe did not see action this week as the Royals played only one match, taking a 4-0 loss to Portland on Friday night. Utah will face the second-place Seattle Reign at 10:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday (July 11) before hosting Orlando at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday (July 14). The match against Orlando will be broadcast on ESPNews.

BECKY SAUERBRUNN – UTAH ROYALS FC – DEFENDER
Season Stats – GP-GS: 14-14 Goals: 0 Assists: 0 Shots: 1 Minutes: 1,260
Sauerbrunn and the Royals played one match on the week, going on the road to face the Portland Thorns on Friday. Utah took the 4-0 loss to the Thorns, an anomaly for the Royals who were giving up the fewest goals in the league thanks in part to the play of ace-defender Sauerbrunn. Utah will face the second-place Seattle Reign at 10:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday (July 11) before hosting Orlando at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday (July 14). The match against Orlando will be broadcast on ESPNews.

EMILY SONNETT – PORTLAND THORNS FC – DEFENDER
Season Stats – GP-GS: 13-13 Goals: 1 Assists: 0 Shots: 2 Minutes: 1,125
Sonnett and the Thorns turned in a stellar defensive performance on the week, shutting out the Utah Royals with a 4-0 victory on Friday night. Sonnett played the full 90 minutes for Portland and returns to action this Sunday (July 15) with a home match against the Houston Dash at 11 p.m. ET.

It was also a community outreach night in Portland as the Thorns took up collections for the Children’s Book Bank.
