Chapel Hill, N.C. – Coming off a win to open the season at Michigan State’s Mary Fossum Invitational, the Virginia women’s golf team posted a runner-up performance Sunday at the Tar Heel Invitational played at Finley Golf Course. UVA finished at 8-under 856, six shots behind tournament champion Duke.
The Cavaliers shot 1-under 287 on Sunday, sharing low-round honors for the day with third-place Arkansas. The Razorbacks finished three strokes behind the Cavaliers in the final team standings. UVA opened the tournament by shooting 11-under 277 on Friday, the second-lowest 18-hole score in program history.
UVA’s one-two finish to start the season is the best in program history.
A pair of top-five finishes led UVA. Senior Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.), who opened the season with a win at the Fossum Invitational, placed fourth at 5-under 211. She shot even par 72 during the final round. The tournament marked the seventh top-10 finish of her career. Sophomore Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.) was one shot behind Redding in fifth place. She used a team-best final round of 3-under 69 to finish at 4-under 212.
Senior Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) was 12th overall at 1-over 215. She shot even par on Sunday. Sophomore Julia Ford (Shrewsbury, Mass.) finished 23rd at 4-over 220 that featured a final-round score of 76. Senior Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) was 61st at 227. She shot 74 on Sunday.
The Cavaliers take a week off before returning to action Oct. 26-28 when they compete at The Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
