Alpharetta, Ga. – The Virginia men’s golf team is in ninth place following the opening round of competition at the Golf Club of Georgia CollegiateInvitational. The Cavaliers shot 1-under 287 and are just one shot out of fifth place. Tournament host Georgia Tech grabbed the early lead, shooting 16-under 270.
Virginia was led senior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.), who finished the day in 15th place at 2-under 70. Sophomore Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) is one shot behind him in 25th place. A trio of UVA golfers are tied for 36th at 1-over 73. That group includes sophomore WeiWei Gao (Cebu City, Philippines), freshman David Morgan (Naples, Fla.) and junior Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.).
Georgia Tech’s Noah North leads the field in stroke player after shooting 7-under 65.
