Virginia Tops Old Dominion, 73-67

NORFOLK, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (1-2, 0-0 ACC) picked up a 73-67 victory at Old Dominion (3-1, 0-0 C-USA) on Sunday (Nov. 17) at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cavaliers held a 35-31 advantage at halftime and used a 12-1 run in the third quarter to build up a 51-43 lead, but Old Dominion refused to go away. The Monarchs hit the first shot of the fourth quarter, narrowing the deficit to 56-52 with 9:39 remaining, but then both teams had their offenses stall. ODU missed its next six field goal attempts as well as a pair of free throws while the Cavaliers missed six-straight shots. Willoughby ended UVA’s scoring drought by hitting a pair of free throws with six minutes remaining in the game. Old Dominion narrowed the gap to three points, 62-59, after Maggie Robinson hit a three-pointer, followed by a free throw from Victoria Morris with 2:52 remaining, but the Cavaliers answered with field goals from senior Mone Jones (Durham, N.C), junior Dominque Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.), Aiyotan and another from Jones on its next four possessions to secure the win.

NOTES

• This was Tina Thomspon’s first victory as a head coach
• Virginia outrebounded its opponent for the third-straight game (47-35)
• The Cavaliers held a one-rebound edge at the half (21-20), but outrebounded the Monarchs 26-15 in the second half
• Six different Cavaliers made UVA’s six shots in the first quarter
• The Cavaliers led for all but four minutes of the game
• Old Dominion was 1-of-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and 12-of-21 overall. Virginia shot a season-best 85.7 percent from the line (24-of-28) including going 5-of-6 in the fourth quarter
• Junior Shakyna Payne (Ackworth, Ga.) posted career highs in points (6) and rebounds (4) in the second quarter alone. Her previous career highs were four points (last year vs Central Connecticut) and three rebounds (achieved twice last year, last vs. Ohio). She also matched her career high with two blocked shots
• Mone Jones scored a career-high 11 points and matched her career high in rebounds with seven
• Jones was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the line
• Willoughby (14), Toussaint (11), Jones (11) and Aiyeotan (10) all scored in double figures
• Every Virginia player scored at least two points. It was the first time that every eligible player scored in a game since Nov. 12 of last year against Central Connecticut
• Every Virginia player had at least one rebound
• Old Dominion leads the all-time series 19-15
• Virginia snapped a streak of three-straight losses to ODU. UVA’s last win in Norfolk was Nov. 22, 2002. The Monarchs are now 12-4 over the Cavaliers in Norfolk including an 88-85 victory in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament
