Four Virginia Players Named All-Region Selections By United Soccer Coaches

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –Four members of the Virginia women’s soccer team have been named All-Region selections by the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced with the release of its annual teams.

Junior defender Phoebe McClernon (West Chester, Pa.) and freshman forward Alexa Spaanstra (Brighton, Mich.) were named first-team selections, while junior defender Courtney Petersen (Canton, Mich.) was named a second-team selection. Freshman forward Rebecca Jarrett (Washington Township, N.J.) was named a third-team selection.
 
McClernon helped Virginia post 10 shutouts on the season, including two matches holding the opponent without a shot. Four of those shutouts came in ACC play, while two came in the NCAA Tournament. 
 
Spaanstra paced the Cavalier offense in her first season, leading the team in points with 24 as she tied for the team lead in goals (9) and assists (6). Two of her goals were game-winning goals, hitting the game winner over Syracuse and against Monmouth in the opening-round of the NCAA Tournament. Spaanstra notched a brace in both matches. Four of her six assists came on game-winning goals, including game-winning assists against Cincinnati, at No. 12 Duke and in both wins over Louisville. 

Despite missing a month of the season due to injury, Petersen played a key role in the Virginia defense and also helped with offensive production as she tallied four assists this season. Petersen assisted on the game-winning goal against Liberty, but also notched assists in wins at No. 11 Penn State, over Wake Forest and over Pittsburgh. 

Jarrett tallied six goals on the year, finishing third on the squad in goals scored, while adding two assists in her freshman campaign. Three of her six goals were game-winners, lifting the Cavaliers to victory over Hofstra, at No. 11 Penn State and at No. 12 Duke. Her two assists came in wins over Hofstra and in the ACC quarterfinals against Louisville.
