Virginia Competes at NCAA Southeast Regional Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Friday (Nov. 9) at the Winthrop Farm cross country course in Rock Hill, S.C. The women’s 6k race will begin at 11 a.m., while the men’s 10k will start at noon.

In the Rankings
• No. 16 Eastern Kentucky leads the men’s race followed by No. 20 Furman, No. 26 NC State and No. 28 Virginia.
• In the women’s race, No. 11 NC State leads the field, while Furman ranks 16th.
Virginia
• The Cavaliers had four runners earn All-ACC honors at the conference championships.
• Graduate student Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) led the men’s team to a fourth-place finish, capturing the fourth-best time at the meet. Redshirt junior Ari Klau (West Harford, Conn.) and junior Randy Neish (Glastonbury, Conn.) recorded their first All-ACC honor, finishing 20th and 21st, respectively.
• Freshman Abbey Green (Bethesda, Md.) led the women’s team, finishing inside the top 10 with a ninth-place finish. Her performance earned her All-ACC honors.
• Green earned ACC weekly honors twice this season. She was named the ACC Runner of the Week and Freshman of the Week for her performance at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown in addition to earning Freshman of the Week honors for her performance at the Penn State National Open.
Last Year’s Regional Championships
• Virginia finished third in the men’s race and seventh in the women’s race at last year’s regional championships. The Cavalier men advanced to the NCAA Championships after earning an at-large bid.
• Demarest was named to the All-Southeast Region Team after recording a seventh-place finish in the race.
Qualifying for NCAAs
• The meet will serve as the qualifier for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Madison, Wisc., on Nov. 17.
• The top two teams from each of the nine regional sites will earn a berth to the national championships, while the remaining 13 at-large teams will be selected by the NCAA Cross Country Subcommittee.
• Additionally, the top four regional finishers not on an advancing team will qualify to compete at the championships.
