No. 19 Virginia Completes Homestand Tuesday Against FIU

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 19 Virginia (2-0-2) will close out its three-game homestand on Tuesday evening with a non-conference match against FIU (2-4) at Klöckner Stadium. The game, scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, will air live on ACC Network Extra.

FOR STARTERS
• The Cavaliers are one of 16 unbeaten teams left in the NCAA. Just Wake Forest and Virginia remain unblemished from the ACC.
• Virginia’s longest homestand of the season (four games) was shortened to three due Friday night’s postponement.
• The Cavaliers will be squaring off against back-to-back Conference USA opponents. The Cavaliers topped Marshall, 1-0 last Tuesday.
• Since 2015, Virginia is 22-3-3 against non-conference opponents at Klöckner Stadium.
SERIES HISTORY
• Tuesday’s match will be the third time Virginia and FIU have squared off, both previous meetings have taken place at Klöckner Stadium.
• The two programs first faced each other on Sept. 4, 1993, a 3-1 victory from the Cavaliers. They met again four years later and played to a 1-1 draw.
COMMON OPPONENTS
• Before falling victim to Virginia last Tuesday, Marshall lost 2-1 in overtime at home against FIU.
• Part of its 0-3 start to the season, FIU fell 3-0 to Elon at the John Rennie Nike Invitational hosted by Duke on August, 26. The Phoenix were scheduled to play Virginia just six days later but the game was postponed due to weather.
• FIU ended its 2017 season and started its 2018 season with a loss to Duke. In the 2018 opener, Duke topped FIU, 3-1. In the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament, the Blue Devils advanced thanks to a 2-1 victory.
STOUT DEFENSE
• Virginia comes into Tuesday’s match with three shutouts in four games. It currently owns the seventh lowest goals against average (0.23) in the country.
• The back line comprised of Prosper Figbe, Aboubacar Keita and Henry Kessler have played every minute of all four matches.
• Goalkeeper Colin Shutler, a two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Week, has started all four games in goal for Virginia.
SHUTTING THE DOOR
• Shutler was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in four weeks on Monday (Sept. 17). He is the first UVA goalie since Jeff Caldwell was recognized three times in 2016 to be honored multiple times in one season.
• The redshirt sophomore leads the ACC and ranks fourth in the country in save percentage (.947) and seventh goals against average (.023) and
• The four starts this season are the first four starts of Shutler’s career.
NOTING FIU
• The Panthers have bounced back from their 0-3 start with wins in two of the last three games. Both wins (at Marshall – 2-1; vs. UAB – 2-1) have come in overtime.
• FIU was ranked 20th in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll after winning the Conference USA Regular Season Championship and advancing to the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
• In the latest of its two overtime wins, FIU scored in the 109th minute to get past UAB, 2-1. Joris Ahlinvi, a preseason MAC Hermann Award candidate, scored both goals in the win. He bent his own corner into the net for the game-winner.
