HARTFORD, Conn.- The No. 10 Virginia women's squash team (17-6) opened the Kurtz Cup on Friday (Feb. 22) with a 9-0 victory against No. 15 Middlebury (12-5) in the tournament quarterfinals at the Kellner Squash Center.

HARTFORD, Conn.- The No. 10 Virginia women’s squash team (17-6) opened the Kurtz Cup on Friday (Feb. 22) with a 9-0 victory against No. 15 Middlebury (12-5) in the tournament quarterfinals at the Kellner Squash Center.
 
The Cavaliers opened the day with an 11-7, 11-2, 11-4 win from senior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) in position six against Anne Glassie. Junior Julia Thompson(Newtown Square, Pa.) followed with an 11-9, 11-9, 12-10 victory against Mira Chugh, before back-to-back victories from sophomore Emily Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) in position three and sophomore Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) in position eight gave the Cavaliers a 4-0 start. Woodworth defeated Alexa Comai 11-5, 11-6, 8-11, 6-11, 11-7, while Almeida topped Natasha Lowitt 11-7, 11-7, 11-8.
 
Freshman Caroline Baldwin (Rye, N.Y.) clinched the fifth point, battling to a 3-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9 win against Natalie Madden in position five.
 
Freshman Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) and junior Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) added wins in positions two and seven, respectively. Haywood went 11-5, 11-6, 11-7 against Ideal Dowling as Doss topped Gwen Davis 11-3, 11-9, 11-6.
 
Junior Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) recorded the eighth point of the match with an 11-8, 11-4, 11-7 win against Virginia Schaus in position four, while freshman Emma Jinks (Stratford, Prince Edward Island) rounded out the match with an 11-8, 11-6, 11-4 win at the top of the ladder against Beatrijs Kuijpers.
 
Virginia will return to action tomorrow to face No. 11 Cornell (6-10) in a semifinal match at 4:30 p.m. The two teams met earlier in the season (Dec. 1). The Cavaliers won the match in Harlem, N.Y., 6-3.
