Hilton Head, S.C. – The No. 14 Virginia women’s golf team shot 7-over 291 and is tied for sixth place following the open day of play at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
 
Host South Carolina leads the 17-team field at 2-under 282. The No. 10 Gamecocks are two shots ahead of No. 19 Florida State. No. 13 Wake Forest is third at 285, No. 3 Duke is fourth at 289 and LSU is fifth at 290. No. 23 Furman is tied with the Cavaliers.
 
Virginia was led by senior Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.), who shot even par 71. She ended Friday’s play in 10th place. One shot behind her in 20th place is sophomore Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.). Senior Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) is in 28th place at 2-over 73 and classmate Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) is 44th after opening with a 75. Freshman Riley Smyth (Cary, N.C.) is in 81st place with an 80. Junior Julia Ford (Shrewsbury, Mass.), who is competing as an individual, shot 73 and is also tied for 28th place.
 
Florida State’s Frida Kinhult leads the field at 3-under 68.
 
The second round of the tournament gets underway Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Virginia will be paired with LSU for Saturday’s play. Live results are online at Golfstat.com.
