RALEIGH, N.C. –  The No. 3 Virginia men’s tennis team (12-2, 3-1 ACC) picked up a 4-2 win at No. 27 NC State (10-6, 1-1 ACC) on Friday (March 15) in Raleigh, N.C.
 
NC State won the doubles point, but the Cavaliers won four of the five completed singles matches to defeat the Wolfpack. Sophomore Matthew Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) clinched the victory with a win on singles court six.
 
NC State picked up wins on courts one and three in doubles to take the early 1-0 lead.
 
Freshman Brandon Nakashima (San Diego, Calif.) tied the match, 1-1, defeating Igor Saveljic 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(6) on court two. NC State retook the lead with a victory on court one. Virginia quickly tied it back up at two-all with sophomore Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) picking up a 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 victory over Yannai Barkai. In another three-set match, senior Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) defeated his opponent 6(8)-7, 6-2, 6-4 to put the Cavaliers ahead 3-2. A strong performance from Lord on court six (6-3, 6-2) secured Virginia’s 4-2 victory. Senior Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man) was leading 6-0, 5-4 on court five when play was halted.
 
Virginia closes out its road trip by facing No. 2 Wake Forest (15-3, 2-0 ACC) on Sunday, March 17 at 1 p.m. in Winston-Salem. Live scoring and live streaming video will be available through links posted on VirginiaSports.com.
