Short-Handed Hoos Finish First Round of “The Hootie” in Sixth Place

Awendaw, S.C. – Playing with just four players due to an injury, the Virginia men’s golf team turned in an impressive performance to finish the opening round of The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate tied for sixth place. With all four players’ scores counting, UVA shot 2-under 286.
The Cavaliers were without sophomore Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) who could not compete due to a sore shoulder. Freshman Jack Montague (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) will join the UVA lineup for the final two rounds. The tournament features the traditional scoring of teams playing five players with the four lowest scores counting toward the team’s single-round total.
UVA was led by junior Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.), who posted a round of 3-under 69 to stand fifth. Senior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) shot 1-under 71 and was in 22nd place while senior Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) finished at even-par 72 and was in 31st place. Freshman David Morgan (Naples, Fla.) shot 2-over 74 and is 51st.
South Carolina and Missouri are tied for first place after the opening 18 holes at 9-under 279. A trio of players are tied for first place at 5-under 67.
