CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A pair of first inning errors helped Duke (14-18, 5-4 ACC) jump to an early lead and cruise to an 8-0 win in five innings over Virginia (16-13, 5-4 ACC) in the series finale at The Park on Sunday (March 24).

Much like Friday night’s series opener, early miscues put Virginia in a hole that would prove insurmountable. Allyson Frei (Branchville, N.J.) took the loss in the circle, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits.

Brianna Butler picked up the win for Duke, tossing four shutout innings with just one hit on her ledger.

KEY INNING
Duke used four early hits to capitalize on a pair of Virginia errors in the first inning and jump out to a 4-0 lead for the second time in the series. A one-out error sparked the rally before four consecutive hits, highlighted by a two-run double from Kristina Foreman gave Duke the early advantage.

TOUCHING HOME
• Foreman’s double scored a pair before Raine Wilson and Caroline Jacobsen added RBI to give Duke a 4-0 lead after the first.
• Foreman struck again in the fourth, hitting a shoulder-high offering out to left for a three-run home run to build Duke’s lead to 7-0.
• Jameson Kavel tripled to lead off the fifth inning for the Blue Devils and scored on a single from Jacobsen.

ON THE LINES
• Lacy Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) broke up Duke’s no-hit bid with a double to lead off the fourth inning for Virginia.
• Clare Zureich (Cary, N.C.) worked a scoreless inning in relief for the Cavaliers.
• Tori Gilbert (Mechanicsville, Va.) added a double for Virginia’s only other hit of the afternoon.
