MAPLE CITY, Mich. –The ninth-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team got goals from sophomore forward Alexa Spaanstra (Brighton, Mich.) and junior forward Alissa Gorzak (Naperville, Ill.) to take a 2-0 victory over Illinois on Thursday in an exhibition match.

The teams played a match that consisted of three 30-minute periods to conclude the Cavaliers’ training camp in Michigan this week. Spaanstra scored her goal on a penalty kick in the first period, while freshman Cam Lexow (Abington, Pa.) connected with Gorzak in the third period for the second Virginia goal.

“This has been a great week for us here in Michigan,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We were able to get some quality training sessions in throughout our time here and we had a very competitive scrimmage today against Illinois. We have a lot to work on this next week in preparation for our home opener, but we are looking forward to continuing our growth as a team.”

Virginia will host the Richmond United Boys U14 Team in a 5 p.m. match on Sunday at Klöckner Stadium in its final exhibition of the preseason. The Cavaliers then open the season on Friday, Aug. 23, against UC Irvine at 7 p.m.
