CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (2-3) takes on Old Dominion (3-0) on Sunday, Nov. 24, at John Paul Jones Arena at 2 p.m.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • The Cavaliers are third in the ACC in free throw shooting, making 74.0 percent of their attempts from the line
  • Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) snapped her streak of consecutive free throws made at 25 in the first quarter of the UConn game. She went 7-of-8 from the stripe in the game. She is shooting 93.9 percent from the free throw line, which leads the ACC and ranks in the top-25 in the nation. Willoughby has gone to the line 33 times this season already, which is the most attempts of any player in the ACC
  • Freshman guard Kylie Kornegay-Lucas (Camden, Del.) now ranks second on the team in rebounding. The guard has come off the bench to grab an average of 6.8 rebounds per game
  • The Virginia guards are the top four rebounders on the team with Willoughby (8.3) and Kornegay-Lucas (6.8) followed by freshman Carole Miller (Alexandria, Va.) with 6.3 per game and senior Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) with 6.0. The guards also have 10 of Virginia’s 13 blocked shots
  • Willoughby scored 13 points at UConn, with 12 of those coming in the third quarter. She is averaging 18.0 points per game, which ranks fourth in the ACC
  • Willoughby leads the team in scoring (18.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg). She finished last season as the team leader in both categories, the first Cavalier player to pace the squad in both since now-assistant coach Monica Wright did so in 2010
  • Both Willoughby and freshman Carole Miller (Alexandria, Va.) are averaging 2.0 steals per game. Senior guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) grabbed three steals against UConn
  • Freshman guard Kylie Kornegay-Lucas (Camden, Del.) continues to be a spark off the bench for the Cavaliers. She is second on the team in rebounding, averaging 6.8 rebounds per game. She also leads the team in blocked shots, averaging 1.0 per game

 
LAST TIME OUT

  • UVA fell 83-44 at No. 4 Connecticut on Tuesday (Nov. 19) at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
  • Virginia held an early 9-5 lead, but UConn went on a 21-1 run at the end of the first quarter to take control of the game and outscored the Cavaliers in every frame to pick up the win.
  • Virginia went 14-of-57 (24.6 percent) from the field. UConn shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59)
  • UVA was 10-of-14 from the free throw line (71.4 percent)
  • UConn held a 42-35 edge in rebounding
  • UConn outscored Virginia 36-8 in the paint. The Huskies scored 20 fast break points while the Cavaliers had four
  • UConn scored 20 points off 19 UVA turnovers

 
SCOUTING Old Dominion

  • Old Dominion (3-0) comes into the game undefeated, including an 89-77 win over Auburn
  • The Monarchs are coming off one of the biggest turnarounds, not only in program history, but in the nation. In Nikki McCray’s second season, the Monarchs went 21-11, marking a 13-win improvement from the previous season. The 13+ win mark was the second-best single-season improvement in program history and the sixth-best turnaround in the NCAA last year. With the 21 wins, ODU earned an at-large bid to the WNIT, the program’s seventh appearance in the WNIT and first postseason appearance since 2015
  • Sophomore Ajah Wayne was named C-USA Player of the Week after scoring a career-high 35 points in the Monarchs 89-77 win over Auburn on Nov. 14
  • Old Dominion leads the all-time series, 19-15, and has won three of the last four meetings
  • Virginia played at ODU last season, topping the Monarchs 73-67 for the first victory as a head coach for Tina Thompson
  • McCray is a two-time Olympic gold medalist as a member of Team USA in 1996 and 2000. Virginia head coach Tina Thompson was a two-time gold medalist with Team USA in 2004 and 2008
  • McCray and Thompson were USA Basketball teammates on the national team that won a gold medal at the 1998 FIBA Women’s World Championship

 
 
ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers host the Cavalier Classic Tournament November 30 and December 1. Virginia takes on James Madison in the tournament’s first game on Saturday (Nov. 30) at 2 p.m. followed by UCLA and UCF at 4:30 p.m. On Sunday (Dec. 1) JMU and UCF play at 1 p.m. followed by UVA and UCLA at 3:30 p.m.
