CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (1-0) opened the 2019-20 season with a 84-60 victory over Bucknell (0-1) on Tuesday (Nov. 5 ) at John Paul Jones Arena.
 
Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) posted the first 30-point game of her career, scoring 31 points while also adding 11 rebounds. Senior forward Lisa Jablonowski (Ernster, Luxembourg) and redshirt freshman Amandine Toi (Paris, France) also finished with double-digit points, scoring 16 and 11, respectively.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cavaliers opened the season with some hot shooting, using a 4-of-4 stretch in the first quarter to push out to an early 11-7 lead. A three pointer from Toi with 4:44 remaining in the first half gave UVA its first double-digit lead, 28-28. Virginia finished the first half making five of seven field goal attempts to finish the half with a 37-26 advantage, making 54. 2 percent of its field goal attempts. After a three-point narrowed the Cavaliers’ lead to eight with four minutes remaining in the third period, freshman Carole Miller (Alexandria, Va.) scored back-to-back buckets to extend the lead back to double figures. The Cavaliers used an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

  • Virginia did not trail in the game
  • The Cavaliers’ largest lead was 14 points (1:37 in the 3rd period) prior to the fourth quarter
  • Virginia outscored the Bison 47-34 in the second half
  • Willoughby’s 31 points was the most by a Cavalier since Monica Wright scored 34 against Green Bay on March 21, 2010
  • Willoughby’s double-double was the 15th of her career
  • Wiloughby went 9-of-15 from the field and 10-of-11 from the free throw line
  • This was the first career start for Dani Lawson
  • Amandine Toi and Dylan Horton (Los Angeles, Calif.) were both in the starting lineup for the first game of their collegiate career
  • This was Toi’s first collegiate game after missing both the 2017-18 season and the 2018-19 seasons with injuries
  • This was the first action for Lawson since Nov. 25, 2017, her last game at Purdue before missing the rest of the year with an injury. She sat out 2018-19 after transferring
  • Toi hit a three-pointer on her very first career shot attempt
  • The Cavaliers freshmen (including Toi) combined to score 37 points
  • Miller scored nine points. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas (Camden, Del.) scored seven. Meg Jefferson (Sydney, Australia) scored six. Horton scored four
  • Virginia finished the game shooting 54.9 percent (28-of-51). Bucknell shots 39.6 percent (21-of-53)
  • Virginia held a 38-19 rebounding advantage
  • Senior guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) did not play in the game due to a violation of team rules

 
ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers will head to the west coast for a two-game road trip, playing at Southern California on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. (ET) and following that with a contest at CSUN (Cal State Northridge) on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. (ET)
  • Head Coach Tina Thompson’s jersey will be retired by the school in a pregame ceremony at the Galen Center before the start of the game against USC
  • Both games will stream live online and will have live stats available
  • Virginia returns home to host Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.
