CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia department of athletics and the Virginia Athletics Foundation announced today (Dec. 6) that Virginia softball’s new stadium will be named Palmer Park in honor of former Cavalier pitcher Lisa Palmer and her mother, Frances, who provided the lead gift for the facility.

Palmer Park is the first athletics competition site named for a former female student-athlete at Virginia. The name was officially approved by the UVA Board of Visitors on Friday.

Lisa Palmer, President and incoming CEO of Regency Centers Corporation, pitched for the Cavaliers from 1986-89, establishing school records in wins (74), innings pitched (861.2), complete games (102) and games started (112). She co-holds the school record for wins in a single season, racking up 27 victories in the circle during the 1988 campaign. Palmer was the first UVA softball player to have her jersey number, 22, retired.

The Palmers’ contribution to the stadium project expanded their support of the softball program after endowing a full scholarship in 2014 that is presented annually to a player from outside the Commonwealth who exemplifies leadership, hard work and dedication to the team. Lisa also served on the Virginia Athletics Foundation Board of Trustees from 2004-09.

Palmer Park, which is located adjacent to Klöckner Stadium, will be completed in time for the 2020 season with the first home game scheduled for March 3. The new facility includes a player development center, locker room, team lounge, training room and press box among other amenities.
