Virginia Tops Stony Brook 56-44

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three players scored in double-figures as No. 9 Virginia (9-1) won 56-44 over Stony Brook (7-6) on Wednesday night at John Paul Jones Arena.
Kihei Clark (Woodland Hills, Calif.) led the Cavaliers with 14 points and had six assists. Mamadi Diakite (Conakry, Guinea, Africa) scored 13 points with six rebounds and two blocks. Jay Huff (Durham, N.C.) added 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
UVA’s bench scored 20 points in the win. The Cavaliers shot 40 percent, while Stony Brook shot 38 percent. Virginia led 31-29 in rebounds, had two shot clock violations and forced 17 turnovers. Elijah Olaniyi led Stony Brook with 11 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Clark hit a three to open the game, then Virginia used an 11-0 run to lead 14-2 at the 14:18 mark. Stony Brook made a run to cut it to five, but the Cavaliers responded with Diakite scoring four-straight points and Clark hitting a jumper to lead 20-9. Virginia took a 28-21 lead into the half after a three just before the buzzer by the Seawolves.
The teams traded baskets early in the second half. With a 45-38 lead, Virginia mounted an 11-2 run sparked by back-to-back baskets for Huff and capped off with a three from Tomas Woldentensae (Bologna, Italy) to seal the win.
THE GAME BALL GOES TO
Jay Huff provided a spark off the bench with 12 points and seven boards. Huff scored back-to-back baskets and had a block that led to a fast break to help secure the win.
