CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia redshirt sophomore guard De’Andre Hunter (Philadelphia, Pa.) has been named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-America Third Team, announced Monday (March 18).
 
Hunter spearheads UVA’s top-ranked defense that yields 55.1 points per game. He is averaging career highs in points (15.1) and rebounds (5.0). He ranks third in the ACC field goal percentage (53%), seventh in free throw percentage (78.4%) and 13th in scoring (15.1).
 
Hunter earned Battle 4 Atlantis MVP honors and ACC Player of the Week accolades after averaging 19.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in the tournament. Hunter has eight 20-point games this season, highlighted by a career-high 26 points at Louisville. Hunter earned All-ACC first-team honors and was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
 
Joining Hunter on the USBWA All-America third team were Chris Clemons (Campbell), Mike Daum (South Dakota State), Dedric Lawson (Kansas) and PJ Washington (Kentucky).
 
R.J. Barrett (Duke), Rui Hachimura (Gonzaga), Ja Morant (Murray State), Grant Williams (Tennessee) and Zion Williamson (Duke) were named to the USBWA All-America first team.
 
Jarrett Culver (Texas Tech), Carsen Edwards (Purdue), Ethan Happ (Wisconsin), Markus Howard (Marquette) and Cassius Winston (Michigan State) were named to the second team.

No. 1 seed Virginia (29-3) plays No. 16 seed Gardner-Webb (23-11) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, March 22. Tipoff is at approximately 3 p.m. on truTV.
