FLUSHING, NY – Virginia men’s tennis alum Thai-Son Kwiatkowski has been granted a wild card by the USTA and will play in the main doubles draw of the 2019 U.S. Open, as announced Saturday (August 23) by the United States Tennis Association.

Kwiatkowski will be playing alongside fellow American Noah Rubin. Rubin played one season of college tennis at Wake Forest, falling in the 2015 NCAA singles championship final to Ryan Shane. They will face Luke Bambridge of Great Britain and Ben McLachlan of Japan in the first round.

Another UVA alum, Dominic Inglot, is also playing in the doubles tournament on the opposite end of the draw. Inglot will be partnering with Marcelo Demoliner of Brazil. They will take on the 12-seed, Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies of Germany.

Both tandems dropped their first round matches. Kwiatkowski and Rubin won their first set 6-4, but lost thee second 6-1. The third set was knotted 6-6 and went to a tiebreaker with Bambridge and McLachlan winning 7-4 to advance to the second round. Inglot and Demoliner were edged 6-4, 7-5 in straight sets.

Kwiatkowski, who is currently ranked No. 204 in the world in singles, competed in the singles qualifying tournament, but fell to the No. 9 seed and World No. 109 Mikel Ymer, being edged in a third-set tiebreaker, falling 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(2).

This will be Kwiatkowski’s second time playing in a US Open main draw after competing in singles in the 2017 tournament.
