Virginia Plays Home Matches Friday and Sunday against BC, UCF

Virginia hosts Boston College on Friday at 5 p.m. and UCF on Sunday at noon

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The Virginia men’s tennis team (3-2, 0-1 ACC) plays two home matches this weekend, taking on Boston College (1-1, 0-0 ACC) on Friday, January 31 at 5 p.m., and UCF (2-2, 0-0 AAC) on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 12 p.m. at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
 
Both matches will have live scoring and live video streams. Admission and parking are free.
 
NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • The Cavaliers are ranked No. 21 in this week’s Tennis Channel/USTA College Tennis Rankings. Virginia is receiving votes in the Oracle/ITA team rankings
  • Freshman Christian Alshon (Boca Raton, Fla.) leads the Cavaliers in victories this spring, improving to 5-0 in dual matches with a pair of wins during ITA Kickoff Weekend. Alshon is 10-2 overall this season, one of four Cavaliers to post double-digit singles wins this year
  • Sophomore William Woodall (Washington, D.C.) is also undefeated in singles this spring, posting a 3-0 dual match record and an overall mark of 7-3
  • Virginia is a combined 7-0 on courts four and five in dual matches
  • Revised singles and doubles rankings will come out next week. Junior Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) is currently UVA’s highest-ranked singles player at No. 68. Sophomore Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) is No. 115. Goetz leads the team with a 14-5 singles record and a 3-1 mark in dual matches

 
NOTING THE OPPONENTS

  • This will be the ACC opener for Boston College
  • BC opened the spring with a 4-3 win over Charlotte but fell 5-2 to Yale last weekend
  • Derek Austin was selected to the 2019 All-ACC Men’s Tennis Third Team, becoming the program’s first All-ACC honoree since 2012. Austin posted a 12-13 singles record last season while playing in the No. 1 singles slot for the entire campaign
  • UCF is No. 23 in this week’s Tennis Channel/USTA College Tennis Rankings and is receiving votes in the Oracle/ITA team rankings
  • UCF’s two losses are to No. 1 Florida and a 4-3 loss to No. 10 UCLA at ITA Kickoff Weekend
  • The Knights visit No. 7 Wake Forest on Friday at 5 p.m. before traveling to face Virginia at noon on Sunday
  • Two Knights are ranked in the top-30 for singles. Gabriel Decamps is ranked No. 22 and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi is No. 29. Decamps is the reigning AAC Player of the Week
  • As a doubles team, Decamps and Grassi Mazzuchi were the runners-up this fall at the ITA All-American championship and are currently ranked No. 6 in the ITA Doubles Rankings. Decamps won the consolation bracket singles championship at the ITA Fall National Championships

 
ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers close out the current homestand by hosting No. 8 TCU on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Boar’s Head Sports Club, the last home match until UVA hosts Notre Dame on Sunday, March 1 at 12 p.m.
