CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 8 Virginia men’s tennis team (3-0) hosts Old Dominion (0-2) indoors on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Virginia moved up to No. 8 in this week’s ITA team rankings after starting the season at No. 22
  • The Cavaliers swept the first ACC weekly honors with freshman Jeffrey von der Schulenburg (Zurich, Switzerland) being named the ACC Singles Player of the Week and junior Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and freshman Chris Rodesch (Angelsberg, Luxembourg) earning the doubles team honor
  • von der Schulenburg has started his collegiate career going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles playing with fellow freshman Iñaki Montes (Pamplona, Spain)
  • von der Schulenburg’s three singles victories have all been straight sets, including a 6-4, 7-5 win over No. 80 James Trotter of Ohio State
  • Montes picked up a top-25 victory against Ohio State’s Kyle Seelig (ranked No. 25 in singles) with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Montes is 2-0 in singles to start his collegiate career
  • Rodesch and Goetz clinched both doubles points in the ITA Kickoff Weekend matches. Rodesch also clinched the match win against Iowa with his 6-4, 6-1 win on court five against Nikita Snezhko
  • Senior Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) had the clincher in UVA’s win at No. 3 Ohio State. Ross had dropped his first set 6-2, but came back to dominate the final two sets 6-3, 6-1 against Robert Cash to close out the victory
  • The 4-2 win over Ohio State earned UVA a place in next month’s eight-team field for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. It was only Ohio State’s second loss at home since April of 2003

NOTING OLD DOMINION

  • Old Dominion opened its season last weekend at Clemson, taking on Auburn (L, 7-0) and the host Tigers (L, 6-1) in duals on Saturday and Sunday
  • Old Dominion went 11-3 in the shortened 2020-21 season
  • Five Monarchs were named to the 2020 All-Conference USA team, headlined by Luca Maldonerearning Co-Player of the Year honors and Tomislav Podvinski being named the Co-Newcomer of the Year. Old Dominion had the most players collect postseason recognition by the league
  • Maldoner and Nicola Vidal are No. 25 in the preseason ITA doubles rankings
  • Virginia leads the all-time series 26-2 and has won the last nine meetings. ODU’s last win over UVA came in 2002

  • The Cavaliers host No. 16 Wake Forest in a non-conference meeting between the two ACC teams on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. indoors at the Boar’s Head Sports Club
