CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 7 Virginia men’s tennis team (5-0) defeated No. 14 Wake Forest (3-2) by a 5-2 score on Saturday (Feb. 6) at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

Wake Forest won the doubles point, but the Cavaliers won five of the six singles courts.

In doubles, Wake Forest won 6-2 on the top court, but both courts two and three went to tiebreakers. The Deacons won both tiebreakers 7-4 to take the point.

In singles, freshman Chris Rodesch (Angelsberg, Luxembourg) tied the match with a quick 6-2, 6-3 win over Robert Maciag on court five. Freshman Jeffrey von der Schulenburg (Zurich, Switzerland) followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Siddhant Banthia to give UVA a 2-1 lead. Senior Carl Söderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) Won his first set 6-3, but was blanked 6-0 in the second set to force a third set. Söderlund won the decider 6-2 to put UVA up 3-1. Both courts two and three’s second sets went to tiebreakers at the same time. Junior Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) won his 7-4 to clinch the victory right before freshman Iñaki Montes (Pamplona, Spain) outlasted Tada Baadi 10-8 to give UVA a 5-1 lead. The Demon Deacons Rrezart Cungu got a late break to take his match on court six to make it a 5-2 final.

MATCH NOTES

  • This was a non-conference match between the two ACC teams. Their conference match will take place on Feb. 28 in Winston-Salem
  • Jeffrey von der Schulenburg (5-0) and Iñaki Montes (4-0) are both undefeated in singles this season

  • The Cavaliers will head to Champaign, Ill., to compete in the eight-team 2021 ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 12-14
  • The seeding, match-ups and schedule for the tournament will be released next week
