CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia relief pitcher Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md.) was one of 45 players named to the initial watch list for the 16th Annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I Baseball.

Schoch joined the Cavaliers prior to the 2020 season as a graduate transfer and immediately had impact on the Virginia bullpen. Last season, Schoch led the team and was tied for second in the NCAA with 11 appearances. The sidearm righthander struck out 24 batters in 16.2 innings while pitching to a 1.62 ERA. His five saves last year were the second most in the ACC.

The NCBWA recognized Schoch as a preseason second team All-American earlier in the week.

Including a save in the 2021 season opener against UConn, Schoch as six career saves in a Cavalier uniform and left UMBC as the program’s all-time saves leader with 13.

The Cavaliers continue their home stand on Saturday afternoon with the middle game of a three-game series against UConn. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ACCNX.
