No. 9 Virginia Falls 7-2 at No. 5 Yale in Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, CT. – The No. 9 Virginia women’s squash team (0-1) opened the 2021-22 season with a 7-2 loss at No. 5 Yale (1-0) on Saturday (Nov. 13) at the Brady Squash Center in New Haven, Ct.

Sophomore Meagan Best and senior Mandy Haywood picked up wins for UVA’s two points. Best, in her delayed collegiate debut, topped Sneha Sivakumar 11-5, 7-11, 11-2, 11-9 at the top of the ladder. Haywood earned an 11-1, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9 win against Lindsay Westerfield. Emma Jinks had a tight match at three. She was edged 11-9 in her first two games, but battled back for a 12-10 win in the third before being edged 13-11 in the fourth.

MATCH NOTES

  • This was the Cavaliers’ first team competition since February 23, 2020
  • Sophomores Olivia Walsh and Erin O’Connor also made their delayed collegiate debuts, playing at two and seven respectively

“Despite the two losses it felt great to be competing again. Both men’s and women’s matches were hard and well-fought battles and we will be taking away some positives into what’s likely to be another close match tomorrow against Columbia. Congrats to our Barbados duo of Mandy Haywood and Meagan Best for picking up our two wins on the women’s side. Emma Jinks and Sydney Maxwell played well, too, and were very close to taking their matches into a 5th game. So lots to build on!”

ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers close out the road trip playing at No. 4 Columbia on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m.
  • The match against the Lions will be 3-court system
