CALI, COLOMBIA – Virginia women’s squash junior Maria Moya (Ambato, Ecuador) and senior Sydney Maxwell (Toronto, Canada) won bronze medals in squash at the U23 Junior Pan American Games, being held Nov. 25-Dec. 5 in Cali, Colombia.

Moya won the bronze in singles while Maxwell won her in the team competition.

Moya won her Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches by 3-0 scores to advance to the semifinals where she was edged by eventual silver medalist Dina Soledad Anguiano Gomez.

Team Canada defeated Guatemala 3-0 in the quarterfinals before being edged 2-1 by Mexico in the semifinals. Maxwell won her match against Guatemala 11-4, 11-7, 11-4. She was edged in a tight semifinal match 11-9, 9-11, 12-10, 11-13, 12-10.

The inaugural Junior Pan American Games brought together more than 3,800 athletes from 41 countries competing in 39 disciplines. There will be six medals awarded in squash, with men’s and women’s individual, doubles and team events being contested. The gold medallist in each sport will automatically qualify for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
