CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Defenders Samar Guidry and Laney Rouse of the Virginia women’s soccer team have been named to the 20-player roster selected to represent the United States at the Concacaf Women’s U20 Championship it was announced by US Soccer on Tuesday (Feb. 15).

The team will compete in the Dominican Republic from February 25 – March 12 and seek one of three berths to the 2022 FIFA U-20 Championship. The United States will take on Nicaragua (Feb. 25), Puerto Rico (Feb. 27) and close the Dominican Republic (March 1) to close out the group stage. The 2022 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship features 20 teams – 16 divided into four groups of four, and four who have already advanced to the Round of 16 via pre-tournament qualifying.

The top three finishers in the four groups will advance to the Round of 16 and join the four teams already qualified for the knockout round. From there, the teams will play a single-elimination tournament with the two finalists and third-place game winner qualifying for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. As host of the U-20 WWC, Costa Rica qualified automatically and will not participate in the Concacaf Championship.

Before heading to the Dominican Republic, the team will train in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. from Feb. 16-21.

Guidry and Rouse both participated in the US U-20 Training Camp back in December. Guidry has competed on the international stage before for the United States, competing in the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay. Both players started on the Virginia back line in the 2021 campaign, helping the Cavaliers claim the ACC regular-season championship and advance to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

Players born on or after January 1, 2002, are age eligible for the 2022 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championships.
