Hoos Look to Keep Up Hot Play at Moon Golf Invitational
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Fresh off a record-setting outing to open the spring, the No. 8 Virginia women’s golf team returns to the Sunshine State this weekend for the Moon Golf Invitational hosted by Louisville. The three-day, 54-hole tournament gets underway Sunday and will be contested at the Suntree Country Club’s Classic Course in Melbourne, Fla.
The field features nine top 25 teams, including five in the top 10. Teams set to compete are No. 9 Alabama, No. 6 Arkansas, No. 17 Auburn, Augusta State, No. 15 Baylor, No. 19 Duke, No. 7 Florida, Florida State, Louisville, No. 21 LSU, Miami, North Carolina, No. 3 South Carolina and UCF.
The Cavaliers’ lineup will consist of graduate student Beth Lillie, junior Celeste Valinho, sophomores Jennifer Cleary and Rebecca Skoler and freshman Amanda Sambach. Virginia will tee off starting at 9:20 a.m. from the 10th tee while paired with Augusta and Florida State.
UVA opened the spring with a third-place finish at the UCF Challenge, shooting an all-time best single-round score of 14-under 274 during the final round. Virginia’s final score of 27-under 837 equaled the program’s best tournament score. Cleary led the Hoos by finishing seventh at 8-under 208.
Last year Virginia placed third at the Moon Golf Invitational, shooting 1-under 287. Virginia Bossi led the Cavaliers with her 11th-place showing at 2-under 214. It was her best finish as a collegiate and her three-round total matched her best tournament score at UVA.
