Cavaliers Qualify Two Individuals, Women's DMR for NCAA Championships
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams qualified a pair of individuals in Owayne Owens and Mia Barnett as well as its women’s distance medley relay team for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships held March 11-12 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Owens qualifies for the triple jump after winning the ACC title in the event for the second-consecutive season. His season-best mark (16.60m / 54’5.5”) ranks fourth in the nation.
Barnett qualifies for the mile run after a historic freshman-season for the Cavaliers. The first-year set a Virginia freshman-record in her first attempt at the event this season. She would go on to improve on the record with her season-best time at the Valentine Invitational (4:35.09) which earned her the 15th seed in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The Virginia women qualify for the distance medley relay after a quartet of Barnett, Anzhelika Parenchuk, Keara Seasholtz and Margot Appleton turned in the team’s season-best performance when they won silver at the ACC Indoor Championships. The team’s time of 10:56.84 stands as a school record and earns the Cavaliers the fourth seed in Birmingham.
