O'Leary, Navarro Earn VaSID Women's Tennis Top Honors
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s tennis sophomore Emma Navarro and head coach Sara O’Leary earned the State Player and Coach of the Year awards as announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Tuesday (July 5). The organization also announced its VaSID All-State team with four Cavaliers earning those honors.
ITA Singles and Doubles All-American Navarro was named the 2022 VaSID All-State Player of the Year for the second year in a row. The ACC Player of the Year finished the year with a 26-2 record in her second year of collegiate competition while holding the No. 1 Singles ranking for four weeks and finished the season ranked No. 2. Navarro was also named a Honda Award finalist.
O’Leary, the ITA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, was named the VaSID All-State Coach of the Year for the third year in a row after coaching Virginia to a 23-6 record and quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA Tournament. O’Leary’s Cavaliers were ranked as high as No. 4 during the season and earned the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to the major awards, Virginia named four student-athletes to the VaSID All-State First Team for singles and doubles. Navarro and junior Natasha Subhash were named to the singles team. Navarro and sophomore Hibah Shaikh along with Subhash and freshman Elaine Chervinsky earned doubles recognitions.
VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
