Sambach Advances in Match Play at US Amateur
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia sophomore Amanda Sambach captured a 19-hole win in Wednesday’s opening round of match play to advance to the round of 32 at the 122nd annual U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. Today (Aug. 11), Sambach will face Michigan’s Monet Chun of Canada in a match that tees off at 8:10 a.m. PDT.
Sambach defeated UCLA’s Zoe Campos in the round of 64 of match play. After getting out to a 2up lead to start the match, Campos fought back and got play back to even after seven holes and then took a 1up lead on the eighth hole. Samback squared the match by the 10th hole and never trailed again as the match returned to even four times before she used a birdie on the 19th hole to claim the win.
UVA’s Jennifer Cleary, who also advanced to match play after the opening 36 holes of stroke play, lost her round of 64 contest to Japan’s Saki Baba. Neither player led by more than one hole with the match all square following the completion of 11 holes. Baba took the lead on the 17th hole and held on for a 1up win.
