No. 9 Virginia Opens ACC Play at No. 21 Boston College

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 9 Virginia field hockey team (3-2, 0-0 ACC) opens conference play at No. 21 Boston College (2-4, 0-0 ACC) on Friday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. in Newton, Mass.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

• The Cavaliers remained at No. 9 in this week’s NFHCA Coaches Poll. The team entered the season at No. 12 in the poll
• Virginia is coming off a 3-2 loss at No. 1 Northwestern
• Virginia snapped the Wildcats’ streak of three-straight shutouts, including a 2-0 win against Duke and a 6-0 victory against BC
• Senior Cato Geusgens scored Virginia’s second goal. It was her first goal since her freshman season. The back converted a penalty corner in the fourth corner to pull the Cavaliers to within a goal
• Senior Laura Janssen scored Virginia’s first goal of the game. Janssen has five goals in five games and has scored in every contest except against Temple
• Janssen has already matched her offensive output of last season when she scored five goals in the season. Her best offensive season was her sophomore year (2020-21) when she scored nine goals in 18 games
• Janssen has 26 career goals and 55 career points
• Janssen’s 1.0 goals per game is tied for 10^th in the NCAA and tied for fourth in the ACC
• Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Kennedy matched her career high with eight saves at Northwestern. It was the third time in her career she logged eight saves in a game including in the season-opener at Penn State
• Kennedy is second in the ACC with a .719 save percentage
• Virginia’s two losses this season have been by a single goal. Last season, all nine of UVA’s losses were by one goal including a 1-0 loss in overtime to Boston College in the regular season
• In the spring of 2021 (the second half of the split COVID season), UVA went 3-4, with the final three of those losses coming by one goal, including two overtime losses. UVA’s last 14 losses have all been by one goal
• This is the 50th season of Virginia field hockey. Field hockey was one of three women’s sports to begin at UVA in 1973-74 along with basketball and tennis

NOTING BOSTON COLLEGE

• Boston College opened the season with a 5-0 win against Providence before dropping their next three games
• BC picked up a 2-1 win in a shootout last Friday at Penn before falling 3-1 against Saint Joseph’s
• BC has the highest goals-against average in the ACC at 2.55 per game
• Senior forward Margo Carlin was named to the Preseason All-ACC team. She scored four goals with two assists last season
• Carlin and Peyton Hale each have five points. Carlin has a goal with three assists while Hale has two goals and an assist
• Eight different Eagles have scored goals this season
• Virginia leads the all-time series 16-12
• BC won the regular-season meeting last year, but the Cavaliers downed the Eagles 2-0 in the opening round of the ACC Championship
