ATHENS, Ga. – Members of the Virginia men’s tennis team will be competed as individuals at the Southern Intercollegiate, being held Sept. 16-18 in Athens, Ga.
Juniors Iñaki Montes, Chris Rodesch, Jeffrey von der Schulenburg and Alexander Kiefer as well as freshman Ty Switzer, grad student Ryan Goetz and fifth-year William Woodall competed as individuals against players from Georgia, Texas and USC in the tournament, teams that finished the season ranked No. 11-13 in the final ITA team rankings.
Montes, ranked No. 4 in the preseason ITA singles rankings, faced No. 1 Stefan Dostanic of USC in his first match of the fall season. Montes dropped the first set 6-3, but rallied for a 7-5 win in the second. Dostanic retired trailing 3-0 in the second set to give Montes the victory.
Kiefer, von der Schulenburg and Goetz also picked up wins against ranked Trojan players.
On Saturday, Rodesch and Goetz picked up singles wins against Georgia players as well as a doubles victory. On the final day of play, Goetz and Montes picked up a doubles win against No. 16 Eliot Spizzirri/Cleeve Harper of Texas.
