CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams open the 2022-23 season with a home dual meet against Florida on Friday and Saturday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.

MEET SCHEDULE
Diving will begin with the three-meter board on Friday (Oct. 21) at 5 p.m. at the AFC. Swimming and the remaining diving events will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 22).

IN THE RANKINGS

  • UVA’s women hold the top spot in the initial CSCAA rankings to start the season, while the men come in at No. 9.
  • Florida’s men are ranked No. 3 and the women are No. 11 in the first poll.

WHO ARE THESE HOOS?

  • The Cavalier women return to the pool as the back-to-back reigning NCAA Champions.
  • Just the fifth program to win back-to-back titles, UVA returns all seven of its individual NCAA wins and nine of the 12 All-Americans from a year ago.
  • Senior Kate Douglass was the Honda Sport Award winner in 2022 after setting American records in all three individual events at the NCAA Championships.
  • Junior Alex Walsh won three individual NCAA titles and sophomore Gretchen Walsh added one title.
  • UVA’s women also won four of the five relay races.
  • On the men’s side, the Cavaliers finished in the top 10 for the third consecutive year, marking the first time in program history UVA has done that.
  • Junior Matt Brownstead had two top-four finishes at NCAAs to lead the Cavaliers.

ABOUT THE GATORS

  • Florida’s men finished third at the 2022 NCAA Championships, winning three national titles and 42 All-American honors.
  • The Gators opened the 2022-23 season with a win over Nova Southeastern. Joshua Liendo was named SEC Men’s Swimmer of the Week after winning three events.
  • Anton Svirskyi posted career-best scores on both diving events to garner Co-SEC Men’s Diver of the Week.
  • Florida’s women finished 13th at the 2022 NCAA Championships.
  • The Gators opened the 2022-23 season with wins over Nova Southeastern and Arkansas.
  • Hayden Miller won two events to earn SEC Women’s Freshman of the Week honors.

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS

  • UVA and Florida have both had significant international success over the last year.
  • Virginia head coach Todd DeSorbo was the US Women’s Team head coach for the 2022 FINA World Championships and Florida head coach Anthony Nesty served as the US Men’s Team head coach.
  • A. Walsh picked up three gold medals, winning gold in the 200 IM and as part of two Team USA relays at the World Championships this summer.
  • Douglass grabbed three bronze medals, including bronze in the 200 breast.
  • At the 2022 Phillips 66 US National Championships, junior Matt King won two national titles and sophomores Jack Aikins and Gretchen Walsh each won one.
