Three Cavaliers Advance to ITA Regional Semifinals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The ITA Atlantic Regional Men’s Tennis Championships will be contested Wednesday through Monday, Oct. 19-24 with Virginia serving as the host institution.

Iñaki Montes, Chris Rodesch and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg have advanced to the semifinals and will be competing at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 24. The finals will take place at approximately 1:45 p.m.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Associations’ regional championships include singles and doubles tournaments. The regional champions and finalists will earn invitations to compete at the 2022 ITA National Fall Championships, being held Nov. 2-6 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.

Ryan Goetz and Alex Kiefer also played  in the Gold Draw for singles and doubles. Ty Switzer will played in the Silver draw for singles, advancing to the gold draw. 20. Switzer and fellow freshman Doug Yaffa also played in silver doubles. Bar Botzer played in the gold doubles draw.

On Thursday, Switzer became the first Cavalier to take the court in the tournament, winning his opener in silver singles 7-5, 6-1 against Richmond’s Daniel Kliebhan. He fell 6-2, 6-1 against ODU’s Codie Van Schalkwyck on Friday in the second round.

Switzer and Yaffa won two doubles matches on Friday to earn a spot in the Gold doubles draw. They downed a pair from Penn State 8-5 in the opener and a duo from Georgetown 8-6 to advance.

Gold Draw action began on Saturday with Montes, Rodesch, von der Schulenburg and Kiefer all winning their opening matches. In doubles, Rodesch and Botzer as well as Kiefer and von der Schulenburg won two matches to advance to Sunday’s quarterfinals. Switzer and Yaffa, who had qualified for the draw by advancing out of the silver draw, lost their opener, but picked up a consolation victory to finish the tournament 3-1.

On Sunday, Montes, Rodesch and von der Schulenburg each won a pair of matches to advance to the semifinals. von der Schulenburg and Kiefer won their quarterfinal doubles match against the tournament’s top seed, Maxence and Charles Bertimon of VCU, 8-2, to advance to the semis, but were edged 8-6 by another VCU tandem. Von der Schulenburg also faced Charles Bertimon earlier in the day in the quarterfinals of singles, winning 0-6, 6-1, 6-3. Kiefer’s run in singles came to an end in the Round of 16 with a loss against the 4-seed, Ryan Fishback of Virginia Tech.

Montes and von der Schulenburg will face one another in the semifinals while Rodesch will take on Fishback.
