The No. 13 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (0-0) opens the 2023 season at No. 14 Stanford (0-0) at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET on Friday in Palo Alto, Calif.

RETURNING EXPERIENCE

  • The Cavaliers return 23 letterwinners from last season.
  • Sophomore Rachel Clark returns as the leading scorer for UVA last season, after posting the most goals by a freshman in school history with 64.
  • Graduate student Ashlyn McGovern added 63 goals and returns with 143 career goals to rank ninth all-time.
  • Junior Aubrey Williams is back after shattering the single season record in draw controls with 149. She is currently fifth in UVA history with 199 career draws.

AGAINST STANFORD & PAC 12

  • UVA and Stanford are meeting for the fourth time in the series and second time in Palo Alto.
  • Virginia is 3-0 against the Cardinal.
  • In the last meeting, UVA topped Stanford, 23-13, on February 27.
  • The Cavaliers played three PAC 12 teams in 2022, winning all three games (Stanford, Cal, USC).

PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA

  • McGovern, Clark and Williams have all earned Preseason All-America honors.
  • McGovern was named preseason All-American by both US Lacrosse Magazine and Inside Lacrosse.
  • Inside Lacrosse also named Clark a preseason All-American.
  • Williams earned the distinction from US Lacrosse Magazine.

NEW STAFF ON THE SIDELINES

  • UVA added assistant coaches Brittany Dipper and Ally Kennedy to its sideline for the 2023 season.
  • Dipper joined the Cavaliers after serving as an assistant coach at Boston University. Prior to coaching, she was a standout goalie at Maryland, winning the 2010 NCAA Championship with the Terps.
  • Kennedy was a graduate assistant for her alma mater, Stony Brook, in 2021. Kennedy is a member of the US National Team and helped lead Team USA at the 2022 World Championships.
