No. 9 UVA Seeks 13th Straight ACC Title This Weekend
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 9 Virginia aims for its 13th consecutive ACC title at the 23rd annual Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship Friday and Saturday (May 12-13) on Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, N.C.
The Cavaliers have won 12 consecutive ACC titles and 21 of 22 overall. UVA has claimed 86 of 95 championship races, including four grand finals in 2022.
Virginia earned the top seed in the Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight. In addition, the Cavaliers are the No. 2 seed in the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four. Syracuse is the No. 1 seed in the Varsity Eight and Duke is the No. 1 seed in the Second Varsity Four. The seeds are determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Last year, Virginia claimed its 12th consecutive ACC Championship after winning posting wins in the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Third Varsity Eight and Varsity Four. Syracuse finished second and Duke finished third. Virginia and Clemson are the only two programs to win the championship in the 22 years the event has been held.
The 2023 ACC Rowing Championship starts Friday, May 12 at 8:05 a.m. with the Third Varsity Eight, followed by the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four. There will be two heats of each event. Virginia will race in heat one in the Third Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four. The Cavaliers will race in heat two in the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four.
On Saturday, May 13, the Petite Final will be held prior to the Grand Final of each event with action set to begin at 8:05 a.m. The order of events includes the Third Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Four, Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Eight.
Three ACC teams are ranked among the latest Pocock/CRCA Coaches Poll with Virginia headlining the group at No. 9, followed by No. 10 Syracuse and No. 14 Duke. Additionally, Notre Dame received votes as the third team outside of the top 20.
ACC Network Extra coverage is available for the prelims on Friday and the finals on Saturday. Fans are permitted to attend the championship and admission is free.
