No. 12 Virginia’s ACC Tournament Run Ends in Pool Play
DURHAM, N.C. – No. 12 Virginia (45-12) was eliminated from the ACC Tournament on Thursday (May 25) after a 10-2 loss to North Carolina (35-21) at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Tar Heels snaped UVA’s 10-game win streak in the process.
Sophomore Ethan Anderson went 2-for-4 with a home run in the contest. The Cavalier first baseman went 4-for-8 with two home runs and two RBI in two games in Durham. Anthony Stephan and Henry Godbout each had two hits in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- North Carolina and Virginia traded unearned runs to begin the game’s scoring. UNC’s Mac Horvath came around to score in the first inning on a UVA fielding error. The Cavaliers evened the game up at one in the third when Godbout came around to score on a two-out Tar Heels fielding error.
- North Carolina scored nine of the game’s next 10 runs on three, three-run innings. UNC catcher Tomas Frick drove in five of the runs, two on a single through the lefts side in the seventh and then delivered a two-out, three-run double in the eighth to put the Tar Heels up 10-2.
- Anderson homered for the second-straight day with a solo shot to right field in the sixth inning to pull UVA within two runs.
- The Cavaliers kept the game at 4-2 with a tremendous defensive effort to end the sixth inning. Colin Tuft played a ball off the wall in left field and got the relay to shortstop Griff O’Ferrall who delivered a strike to Kyle Teel at the plate cutting down Patrick Alvarez trying to score from first base. The outfield assist for Tuft was his first of the season and second of his career.
