BALTIMORE – The Virginia volleyball team (5-2) dropped its second match of the season to Coastal Carolina (4-5), 20-25, 17-25, 22-25, at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 9).

Middle blocker Abby Tadder led the Hoos with 10 kills, while libero Milan Gomillion posted a season-high 27 digs. Gomillion’s 27 digs tied for the most by a UVA player in a three-set match in program history.

Set 1: Coastal Carolina 25, Virginia 20
The Chanticleers took the opening set after the Cavaliers posted 15 kills but at the expense of 16 total errors, which stalled momentum for Virginia offensively. Tadder led the Hoos with four kills in the frame. Gomillion recorded nine digs in the opening game.

Set 2: Coastal Carolina 25, Virginia 17
The second set featured nine tied scores between the two teams. Both sides were knotted 11-11 before the Chanticleers rattled off nine straight points to take a commanding lead. Virginia scored three of the last four points of the set, but its early deficit proved to be too much to overcome. Lauryn Bowie led the Cavaliers in set No. 2 with four kills on eight swings, while Gomillion successfully dug 12 Chanticleer attacks.

Set 3: Coastal Carolina 25, Virginia 22
Game No. 3 was competitive throughout as both teams were even, 18-18, late in the set. However, Virginia could not find its groove offensively and was outscored down the stretch, 7-4. Tadder put down four kills of the seven balls set her was to register a .429 hitting percentage.

GAME NOTES

  • Milan Gomillion posted a season-high 27 digs, which tied for the most by a UVA player in three-set match in program history.
  • The only other time a UVA player recorded 27 digs in a three-set match was Melissa Caldwell against Clemson on Nov. 12, 2004.
  • The Cavaliers fell to 1-2 in the all-time series against Coastal Carolina.
  • Coastal Carolina’s .234 hitting percentage marked the highest by a UVA opponent this season.
