ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 7 Virginia men’s squash team (1-0, 1-0 MASC) opened the season with a 9-0 win against No. 25 Navy (0-1, 0-1 MASC) on Saturday (Nov. 4) at the Prager Family Squash Facility in Annapolis, Md.

The Cavaliers won eight of the nine positions by 3-0 scores. Sophomore JP Tew had the toughest battle of the day. In a match that lasted 60 minutes, he battled Navy’s No. 1 Matt Wang to a 12-10, 8-11, 16-14, 11-6 victory to preserve the sweep.

FROM ASSISTANT COACH GRANT WHITE

“This team has been training and practicing with an intensity, focus, and toughness that I have rarely seen matched. That showed up in high-definition in today’s 9-0 sweep of the Naval Academy. I certainly can’t recall a better season-opening performance from any UVA squad during my tenure. The Midshipmen always put up a determined fight, especially on their home courts—and today was no exception. Our guys drew on the depth and the quality of the work they have put in to win with full authority.”

“I was especially proud to see first years Arhan Chandra and Krishna Mishra open their careers with commanding, composed performances. And, of course, our team captains Evan Hajek and Myles McIntyre led by example as they have done so many times for us. While JP Tew capped the match, showing a whole lot of heart and plenty of guts, too, earning his first win at the No. 1 spot.”

“A well-deserved victory for the players and the sort of complete performance that all of their coaches are thoroughly proud of.”
