CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia’s Stephen Annor, Mouhameth Thiam and Paul Wiese were named to the 2023 United Soccer Coaches All-South Region teams the organization announced Wednesday (Dec. 6). Annor was named to the first-team while Thiam was recognized as a second-team selection and Paul Wiese was named to the third team.

Virginia’s three selections to the All-South Region teams are the most for the program since the 2019 season when five Cavaliers were selected.

Stephen Annor was named the ACC Freshman of the Year while earning first-team All-ACC honors. The Ghanaian forward recorded a total of 10 goals to lead UVA and become the first Cavalier to hit double digits since Daryl Dike accomplished the feat in 2019. Of Annor’s 10 goals, seven came in league play which was tied for the most in the ACC.

The ACC’s Co-Midfielder of the Year, Mouhameth Thiam provided an instant impact as a versatile player for the Cavaliers. Behind only Annor, Thiam provided the second-most points (14) among Cavaliers in 2023 with five goals and four assists. With a knack for showing up in the clutch, Thiam was involved in six of Virginia’s game-winning goals this season.

In his junior campaign, Paul Wiese provided one of his best yet. A proven defender, Wiese set himself apart at right wingback as a constant threat in attacking areas. The UVA standout made a habit of picking out his teammates with pinpoint crosses into the box from open play as well as set pieces. With eight assists, Wiese surpassed a single-season career-high to lead the team in the category. Wiese has been Virginia’s assist leader in two of his three seasons as a Cavalier.
