Virginia Announces 2024 Team Captains
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s lacrosse head coach Sonia LaMonica announced seniors Mackenzie Hoeg (Mattituck, N.Y.), Morgan Schwab (Fairport, N.Y.) and graduate student Kiki Shaw (Owings Mills, Md.) have been selected as captains for the 2024 season.
“No matter the talent, I’ve always believed a team will go as far as its leaders will take it,” LaMonica said. “After inheriting three summer captains this past year, I was curious to see if they were best suited for such an important role. It has become clear to me that not only are they suited for it, but they will thrive. Their maturity, support and buy in from day one has been impressive and their drive to succeed is clear. I’m thrilled to officially announce Morgan, Mack and Kiki as our team captains this year and look forward to their leadership being a catalyst for this next era of UVA women’s lacrosse.”
Hoeg appeared in all 18 games in 2023, starting in 17 and served as a team captain last season. She was third on the team with 40 goals. She led the team with 27 ground balls and was second in draw controls (54) and caused turnovers (13). Hoeg had 10 hat tricks last season and was second on the team with two game-winning goals. She scored a career-high five goals to lead UVA in the win at Pitt and grabbed five ground balls and eight draw controls.
Schwab was a staple in the Cavalier attack last season, starting in all 18 games. She led the Cavaliers in 2022 in assists with 49 and was second in total points with 69. Shwab was named to the All-ACC second team and tabbed a US Lacrosse Magazine All-America honorable mention.
Shaw returns for her fifth season in Charlottesville after serving as a team captain during the 2023 season. In 2023 she appeared in all 18 games for the Hoos and started in 16 of those contests. Shaw had five multi-goal games last season and had a season-high three goals against Princeton.
Virginia kicks off its season with an exhibition game against Johns Hopkins on Saturday (Feb. 3) at 6 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
