CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 12 Virginia women’s tennis team opens the 2024 dual match season with two home doubleheaders. The Cavaliers play two matches on Thursday, Jan. 18, and two more on Saturday, Jan. 20, on the indoor courts of the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

VIRGINIA NOTES

  • The Cavaliers begin the spring season ranked No. 12 in the ITA Team Rankings
  • UVA returns all but one letter winner from last year’s team that posted a 20-7 record, their sixth time posting a 20-win season
  • Sara Ziodato led the team in singles victories in the fall, going 12-4
  • Hibah Shaikh posted an 11-4 singles mark in the fall, followed by Natasha Subhash at 10-3 and Melodie Collard at 10-6
  • Collard and Annabelle Xu were doubles finalists at the ITA All-American, picking up three wins against top-25 teams. They enter the spring ranked No. 13 in the ITA doubles rankings
  • Collard was a doubles All-American last season, going 28-10 and advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship while playing alongside Julia Adams
  • Subhash, a three-time singles All-American and a 2021 doubles All-American, returns for her final season. She reached the 100-singles victory milestone in the fall and comes into the spring with 94 career doubles victories

NOTES ON THE OPPONENTS

  • Virginia is 31-4 all-time against Richmond and has won the last 16 meetings
  • Virginia is 15-3 all-time against James Madison and has won the last three meetings
  • Former Virginia volunteer assistant Tyson Thomas is in his first season as the head coach of the Dukes. Thomas worked on Sara O’Leary’s staff from 2019-2022
  • Virginia is 5-1 all-time against Marshall and has won the last five meetings
  • Virginia is 2-0 all-time against Longwood

 ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers will be hosting ITA Kickoff Weekend matches on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27
  • Texas Tech, No. 20 Georgia Tech and No. 25 Wisconsin will play in the Charlottesville Regional with one spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on the line
  • Virginia hosts Texas Tech on Friday (Jan. 26) at 12 p.m., with the Yellowjackets and Badgers playing at 3 p.m.
  • The two winners face off on Saturday (Jan. 27) at 3:30 p.m.
