Virginia Takes 36-6 Victory At American

WASHINGTON – The Virginia wrestling team (7-2) jumped out to the early lead on Sunday (Jan. 28) and never looked back as the Cavaliers grabbed a 36-6 victory at American (5-10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Virginia won the first three weight classes to open the bout, with Kyle Montaperto (125) and Jack Gioffre (141) sandwiching tech falls around a win by decision from Gable Porter (133).

Following an American victory at 149 pounds, the Cavaliers added three more bonus-point wins with two more tech falls from Dylan Cedeno (157) and Justin McCoy (174) around a major decision from Nick Hamilton (165).

American would take a slim decision at 184 pounds, but Virginia would answer with a tech fall from Krystian Kinsey (197) and a major decision from Ryan Catka (HWT) to close out the dual victory.

NOTES ON THE DUAL

  • Virginia is now 15-1 all-time against American and has won nine straight in the series.
  • Virginia posted five tech fall victories for the second straight dual with the five against American on Sunday.
  • The Cavaliers won eight weight classes with seven of them being bonus-point victories.
  • Ryan Catka improved to 9-0 in dual matches this season and is 11-2 on the season.
  • Justin McCoy is 14-2 on the year and improved to 8-1 in dual action this season. He has tech falls in back-to-back duals with the win on Sunday.
  • Dylan Cedeno hit the mat for the first time in 2024 and delivered a tech fall in his bout at 157 pounds.
