Appleton Named ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday (Jan. 30) that Margot Appleton of the Virginia track and field program has been named the ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week after a performance in which she set a pair of UVA records and set the ACC leading time in two events.
Appleton highlighted an impressive overall performance for the Cavalier program at the Penn State National Open. On the opening day of the competition, the Cavalier junior blazed to a runner-up finish in the mile posting a time of 4:30.87, setting a UVA record by nearly three seconds. The performance puts Appleton on top of the ACC performance list and ranks eighth in the NCAA this season.
Just a day later, Appleton was back on the track for the women’s distance medley relay. Leading off the relay in the 1200-meter leg, she split 3:20.91 as the team combined to go 10:55.45 to set a Virginia program record—Appleton’s second record-setting performance of the competition. Virginia’s time leads the ACC this season and ranks fourth in the NCAA as one of just five teams to record a time under 11 minutes in 2024.
Appleton becomes the second Cavalier to earn ACC weekly honors this indoor track and field season, joining Celia Rifaterra who was named ACC Field Performer of the Week on Jan. 23.
