Virginia Returns To Road At No. 8 NC State Friday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia wrestling team (7-3, 1-1 ACC) returns to the road this weekend as ACC competition continues with a Friday night contest at No. 8 NC State (12-2, 2-0 ACC). The dual is set for a 7 p.m. start.

  • Virginia returns to the road against NC State on Friday night marking the 10th dual contest of the year to be wrestled by the Cavaliers at an opponent’s venue or a neutral site.
  • The Hoos have three wrestlers ranked in the latest InterMat rankings as Marlon Yarbrough vaulted up to No. 25 at 133 pounds after his upset of No. 11 Sam Latona (Virginia Tech) last weekend. Also ranked are Dylan Cedeno (No. 27 at 157 pounds) and Justin McCoy (No. 14 at 174 pounds).
  • Heavyweight Ryan Catka looks to get back in the win column after taking his only dual loss of the season at the hands of his nationally-ranked brother, Hunter, in the dual with the Hokies. Ryan Catka is 9-1 in dual action this season and 11-3 on the year.
  • McCoy is 14-3 on the season with all three defeats coming at the hands of nationally-ranked opponents. One loss was an injury default, while the other were a 2-1 decision in overtime to No. 18 Max Maylor of Wisconsin and a 2-0 decision to NCAA Champion and second-ranked Mekhi Lewis.
  • Jack Gioffre (141) continues to impress at 141 pounds after battling through injury, posting wins by technical fall in back-to-back duals (vs. American and Virginia Tech) and adding a pin in the ACC opener at Duke.
